LUBA 1 battery wearing out: what owners paid, where they got a new one, and what Mammotion says about doing it yourself

A LUBA 1 that stops partway with charge left, or needs three or four charges for a lawn it used to finish on one, may have a worn battery. What two owners did after the warranty ended, what the new pack cost, and what Mammotion says about opening the mower.

What to do next

  1. Safety first

Before you try anything below, read the safety rules from your mower’s manual.

Measure what the charger and power supply deliver before you buy a battery. If a neighbour has a LUBA, try your mower on their charger. One owner did both, found the supply fine and the mower still would not charge on a known-good charger, and then replaced the battery. Another owner's symptom was a mower that stopped about halfway round the lawn with the app showing 50% or more, then read 0% when carried back to the dock and lasted about 30 minutes after charging.

    More about this step

Applies when: a LUBA 1 runs for far less time than it used to, or stops with charge showing.

Worked if: you know whether the battery or the charging side is at fault before you spend money.

Didn't work? Next: step 2 — Ask Mammotion for a replacement battery, through the repair...

Method: two LUBA 1 owners' accounts in the cited threads

  2. Ask Mammotion for a replacement battery, through the repair centre or as a part. Say up front that you will pay for it. One owner, paying in euros, bought one from support for about €270 with VAT and shipping. A Mammotion account says it can arrange a replacement through the repair centre or check battery stock in your region. Owners in the US describe being asked for videos and troubleshooting first, one being sold a used unit at $120 for the LUBA 1000, and others going to a dealer.

    Stop and get help if

if the mower is still in warranty, do not open it: claim the repair instead, because opening it ends the warranty.

    More about this step

Applies when: the mower is out of warranty and the charger is ruled out.

Worked if: you have a quote and a delivery route for the right battery for your model.

Didn't work? Next: step 3 — Know what you are taking on before you open the mower. Mammotion...

Method: a Mammotion account's statements and three owners' accounts in the cited threads

  3. Know what you are taking on before you open the mower. Mammotion says opening it can affect the sealing and recommends an official repair centre. Two owners did it themselves and call it simple, one saying it took 20 to 30 minutes with basic tools, but one warns against removing the screws around each blade hub motor, which that owner says breaks the internal antennas.

    Stop and get help if

never open or rebuild the battery pack itself: an owner who rebuilt one reports a fuse inside the pack that blows permanently.

    More about this step

Applies when: Mammotion cannot or will not supply a battery, or the repair centre cost is the problem.

Worked if: you choose between the repair centre and a DIY swap knowing the cost to the warranty and the seal.

Didn't work? Next: step 4 — Tell us what you paid, where you got the battery and how it...

Method: a Mammotion account's statement and the DIY owners' accounts

  4. Tell us what you paid, where you got the battery and how it went, especially for a LUBA 2 or LUBA 3.

    More about this step

Applies when: you have replaced a battery, or asked and been refused.

Worked if: the picture of cost and availability stops resting on a few owners.

This is not a repair guide. Mammotion recommends that its repair centre replace the battery, and opening the mower ends the warranty. What follows is what two owners did, what they paid, and what Mammotion said.

What the worn-out battery looked like

One LUBA 1 (a Kickstarter unit, in its fourth year) began to stop about halfway round the back yard even though the app showed 50% or more. After the owner carried it back to the charger the battery read 0% and then started charging again, but it never lasted more than about 30 minutes1. The other owner noticed the mower needing three or sometimes four charges for the main lawn, where it had needed one3.

Getting a battery

  • From Mammotion. The second owner contacted support and bought a replacement for about €270, including VAT and shipping3. The first owner says Mammotion would not sell one and said it could not be done at home1. A third owner said Mammotion will sell one if you keep asking and say you will pay, and paid $120 for the LUBA 1000 battery, though the one sent was used5.
  • From a dealer. The first owner paid about $250 for a pack, ordered through a link to a US parts dealer. In the same thread, an owner lists the 1000 battery at $205 and the 3000 and 5000 at $275. Another owner says their Mammotion dealer first wanted to troubleshoot and sell them a new power supply and dock1.
  • What Mammotion says. A Mammotion account replied that it can arrange a battery replacement through its repair centre or help check battery stock in the owner's region. It added that opening the mower can affect sealing, and it recommends an official repair centre2. On 30 September the same account added that for an owner confident to replace it themselves it can also help check stock in their region7, and said that as a general principle it does not recommend customers carrying out repairs themselves8.

Doing it yourself

Both owners did it themselves and call it simple. The first says it took 20 to 30 minutes with a 2.5 mm and a 3 mm Allen key and a video showing which screws come out1. The second owner's write-up carries three warnings. Replacing it means taking the mower apart, improper handling can affect its waterproofing and airtightness, and "if it's in warranty, you will invalidate it". The three screws around each blade hub motor are not to be removed, because that frees the blade chassis and, on that owner's account, "you will break the internal antennas"4. That owner also says the replacement pack for the LUBA 1 is the same one fitted to the LUBA 23.

Rebuilding the old pack is a different job

One owner rebuilt a LUBA 2 pack with larger cells and describes a fuse inside the pack that opens permanently if the pack's electronics see something wrong, which blew during the rebuild and left the pack at 0 V; the owner bypassed it for bench testing and then replaced it6. That is a single owner's account of a modification, and nothing in it is a suggestion to open a battery.

If you are still in warranty, do not open the mower: ask Mammotion for the repair. The warranty terms page sets out what is covered. Tell us what you paid and how it went.
