LUBA 1 after firmware 1.11.1.11 and 1.11.1.16: slower turns, spinning in place, crossed boundaries

LUBA 1 owners report turns that got slower and clumsier after firmware 1.11.1.11, the mower spinning in place or going round in circles at row ends, and crossing no-go zones. Version 1.11.1.16's notes, as an owner quotes them, list a boundary fix and smoother multi-point turns; owners are split on whether it helped.

What to do next

  1. Check which firmware the mower is on in the app. If it is 1.11.1.11 and 1.11.1.16 is offered, read its notes: owners quote a fix for crossing lawn boundaries and smoother multi-point turns. One owner also suggests a cut height of at least 2 inches (5 cm), so the wheels grip grass rather than soil while turning.

    More about this step

Applies when: turns at row ends got slower or clumsier after an update, or the mower spins in place.

Worked if: you know whether the newer version is there, and whether a very low cut is making turns worse.

  2. If it drives into a no-go zone or towards a fence, stop it, then make the zone larger, as one owner did.

    Stop and get help if

it heads under a fence or towards a road, water or people: press STOP on the mower first.

    More about this step

Applies when: the mower crosses a no-go zone or a boundary.

Worked if: the mower keeps clear of the places it was crossing into.

  3. When it happens, upload the log from the app and send Mammotion support the device name, as its account asks.

    More about this step

Applies when: the turns are still bad after the steps above.

Worked if: support has what it asks for to look at your mower.

  4. Tell us your firmware version and whether 1.11.1.16 made the turns better or worse.

Before you start: check the firmware version in the app. Most reports here are about 1.11.1.11, and owners are split on whether 1.11.1.16 is better.

What owners report

  • A LUBA 1 mows a few lines, then gets stuck on a turn and spends 20 to 30 minutes going in circles looking for a place to carry on. Its owner dates it to the last two updates and had tried different mowing angles and multi-point turning without a change3.
  • A LUBA 1 5000 has not been right since 1.11.1.11. Turns that used to take two or three moves became long and laboured, it drove through no-go zones and got stuck, and it nearly went under a mesh fence. After the next update it took what felt like ten minutes to reach its starting point, then turned three times on the spot1.
  • A LUBA 1 owner on 1.11.1.11 says the mower was great until that version, which has "a plethora of problems"2.
  • A LUBA 1 owner who installed the next update says the 180-degree turn at the end of a row is worse: a three-point turn replaced by a turn in place that churns the grass and uses more battery2.

What 1.11.1.16 says, and what owners found

In that thread an owner quotes the notes for 1.11.1.16, dated September 11: "Fixed an occasional issue where the robot could cross lawn boundaries" and "Optimized the smoothness of Multi-Point Turn."2 Two owners on it report no problems: one finds multi-point turns much better and slower than before, the other had no issues after two mows2. The owner who found the 180-degree turn worse had updated the week before, so the version does not settle it.

A Mammotion account told the LUBA 1 5000 owner that the mower plans its own route and starting point, that the case had been passed to the team, and asked for a log uploaded from the app and the device name if it turns on the spot again1. One owner's advice is to let the lawn grow to at least 2 inches (5 cm), because a very low cut puts the four wheels in contact with soil when turning1. To the owner whose LUBA 1 spends 20 to 30 minutes going in circles on a turn, a Mammotion staff account wrote on 24 August to change the obstacle avoidance setting and said it thought the tall grass was the cause4.

The LUBA 2 and later have their own story about multi-point turning; see firmware 1.30.29.20.
